Water From All Over

As you know, water damage can happen anywhere in a home. A leaky roof after a storm to appliance malfunction can all cause extreme damage to your home. While water damage can pop up anywhere, there are certain rooms within a home that tend to see more flooding and leaks than other rooms and will normally require more intensive water damage repair. Here are the four most common rooms for potential flooding inside a residential home.
The Basement
The number one most commonly flooded room in a home is the basement. A basement has many opportunities for flooding as they tend to contain at least one appliance that can malfunction and leak (such as a washer, pipes, or the water heater). Basements can also have wall cracks that allow water from the ground outside to seep in. Sump pump malfunction and water drain back up are also contribute to flooding. Many families use their basements solely for storage, meaning they rarely go into it allowing leaks and other water damage to go unnoticed for long periods of time. This will obviously be a huge problem that calls for major water damage repair. To help prevent basement water damage, take time to regularly go down and check for indications of moisture, a musty smell, and any signs of mold.
The Laundry Room
We love our washing machines, but they are the culprits behind many household floods. Hoses burst and washing machines overflow, this can leave a huge mess and be a costly clean-up. The best way to prevent a problem before it starts is to observe it closely. If you notice your washing machine acting up or leaking even a little, repair it before it becomes a bigger issue.
The Bathroom
There’s so much water in a bathroom that it’s very common for there to be water damage problems. These issues may include things such as improperly sealed showers, toilets, and tubs; leaky faucets, and mold. In order to keep your bathroom from suffering from water damage, make sure to regularly maintain it and keep it as well-ventilated as possible.
The Kitchen
Dishwashers. Sinks. Refrigerators. The kitchen has so many opportunities for flooding and leaks. Serious leaks have been caused by all of these appliances. Pipes under the sink can be a big problem, too. Pay close attention to any strange “behavior” from your appliances. Make sure they are maintained and working properly to prevent any water damage. If anything is leaking, take care of it sooner rather than later!
What To Do First
In the event of flooding, it’s easy to panic and forget what should be done first. Finding standing water from a flood? You’ll need to immediately turn off the main power supply, if it’s in a dry area. Never turn off power while standing in water! If the main power supply is in a wet area, you should call an electrician.
