Avoiding Springtime Water Woes in Illinois
3/25/2024 (Permalink)
As the temperature rises and spring showers arrive, it's crucial to shield your home from potential water damage. Here are some steps you can take to avoid water-related issues during the spring season:
1. Roof Inspection: Harsh winter weather can cause damage to your roof, resulting in loose or damaged shingles. Conduct a thorough inspection to identify any signs of wear and tear, such as missing shingles or cracks. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent water from seeping into your home during spring rains.
2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Gutters and downspouts are essential for directing water away from your home's foundation. Ensure they are free of debris like leaves and twigs, which can cause clogs and lead to water overflow. Regular maintenance can help prevent water damage to your roof, siding, and interior walls.
3. Foundation Maintenance: Fluctuating temperatures and increased moisture levels in spring can worsen existing foundation cracks or create new ones. Inspect your home's foundation for signs of cracking or shifting, and seal any cracks promptly to prevent water intrusion into your basement or crawl space.
4. Plumbing Inspection: Spring thawing can stress your home's plumbing system, increasing the risk of leaks or burst pipes. Watch for signs of water leaks, such as damp spots, water stains, or unexplained increases in water bills. Address plumbing issues promptly to prevent costly water damage repairs.
5. Sump Pump Maintenance: If your home has a sump pump, ensure it is in good working condition before the spring thaw. Test it regularly to ensure proper activation and consider installing a battery backup system to keep it running during power outages.
By taking proactive measures to protect your home from water damage this spring, you can enjoy the season worry-free. In case of water damage, rely on SERVPRO for prompt and professional restoration services. Don't let water issues ruin your spring – safeguard your home today!

Understanding Water Sources
6/20/2022 (Permalink)
Here at SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt Counties, we are faced with water from a variety of sources. Knowing where the water came from and the precautions to take, helps us ensure the safety of our customers and our team members.
Category 1: "Clean Water"
Category one is when a leak comes from a clean source such as a toilet with no urine or feces. In this category, it's important to remember that it will progress into category two or three in this category. Our team will work as hard as possible to ensure that the category doesn't escalate.
Category 2: "Gray Water"
Contamination becomes a concern for our staff and the client during this step. We suggest that the client not enter or ingest any of this water because it can cause health effects.
Category 3: "Black Water"
We will tell our clients not to ingest this type as harmful pathogens that can create health effects with this category. This is because water from this source comes from an unsanitary source which means our crew will be wearing full hazmat suits to ensure their health and safety aren't compromised. This water is created from a source such as water from beyond the toilet trap, a toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has microbial growth starting to grow.
If you find yourself dealing with water in your home, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt Counties. We have the training and expertise to safely extract water and get you back to “Like it never even happened.”
Check Your Appliances
6/3/2022 (Permalink)
Unchecked Appliances can Cause Major Water Damage
Many household appliances utilize water to operate. Dishwashers, refrigerator ice machines and washing machines can wreak havoc if not examined and serviced on a regular basis.
Let's discuss refrigerators as an example since this appliance runs continually 24/7, 365 days a year. It can start leaking at the most inconvenient time, resulting in water damage throughout your kitchen. It is important to remain mindful of situations that can cause your refrigerator to leak and catch water damage as soon as it forms.
Most Water Damage Begins Unnoticed Behind the Appliance.
When you are around your refrigerator, you are probably not looking for leaks. Refrigerator leaks tend to start small and gradually grow to become a bigger problem. You might experience a leak coming from the ice maker, a leaky hose, or the water hookup.
Generally, any leaks coming from an ice maker are the result of built-up condensation and/or a faulty hookup. This can block the draining system and end up leaking through the inside of your fridge and the seals. In addition, a leaky hose can be the result of having the refrigerator pushed up too close against the wall, bending the hose and causing a break and subsequent leak.
When connecting water lines to your refrigerator, make sure not to push it as far back as possible to avoid damaging the hose or line. The water hookup can sometimes spring a leak or may drip, which can go unseen for months and eventually cause major problems including a very nasty mold situation.
Overtime, water leaks can lead to very costly repairs. Depending on the type of leak, you can experience rotting floorboards, mold build up, or a flooded basement. A strong indicator of water damage is wood flooring that separates and warps, or tiles that become loose. It is important to repair or replace the floor quickly to prevent mold from growing in the area.
Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist
4/22/2022 (Permalink)
Maintaining your sump pump could potentially save thousands in water damage.
When was the last time you maintained your sump pump? Here are some tips to show your sump pump some love and keep your basement dry as we enter the rainy season of spring.
- Make sure your sump pump is totally upright. Your sump pump should be sitting on solid, even ground. Any sort of leaning can shift the water in the pump’s pit and put unnecessary pressure on its components.
- Open it up. Take the cover off the sump pump pit or basin and have a look inside. Clear any debris, mud or rocks that you find, as any foreign items can clog your sump pump and cause an overflow.
- Double-check the drain hose. Check to make sure the drain hose is connected, and that it’s not blocked or frozen. A clogged drain hose can cause your sump pump to run continuously, as it won’t be able to dispose of the water that’s filled its pit.
- Clear out the inlet screen. Make sure the inlet screen is allowing water to enter your sump pump’s pit. If your inlet screen is blocked, water won’t be able to make its way into the sump pump’s pit and could lead to a basement flood.
- Keep it afloat. Your sump pump’s float controls when it will turn on and pump excess water out. Make sure the float component can move freely and isn’t blocked. A malfunctioning float can cause your pump to not run when it’s supposed to, or run constantly, eventually burning out your pump’s engine.
- Make sure it’s flowing away from your house. The next time you hear your sump pump running, go outside and make sure its discharge pipe is pumping the water away from your home at a safe distance. If it’s too close, the water could seep back into your pump, causing your pump to run continuously and inefficiently. The more your sump pump runs, the more likely it is to burn out early in its life span.
While you don’t want your discharge pipe too close to your house, shed, garage or other structure, make sure it does stay on your property. You’ll have some unhappy neighbors if your sump pump is pushing your excess water onto their lot. - Give your sump pump a test run. Fill the pit with a bucket of water to turn your pump on. Watch it carefully to see if it’s getting rid of the water, then check the discharge pipe outside to make sure it’s disposed of properly. If the pump doesn’t run, make sure it’s plugged in and its power cord is in working order.
- Plan for the unexpected. Having a backup battery or generator can be crucial if a strong rain storm comes complete with a power outage. And eventually, your sump pump may give out without the help of a power outage. To avoid the stress of trying to buy and install a new sump pump while the water seeps closer and closer to your basement, have a backup sump pump handy — and be sure to test it regularly, too.
- Call a professional. You’ve checked the power cords, discharge pipe, inlet screen and every other piece of the pump, but still can’t figure out what’s wrong. It’s time to call a professional! Risking your basement and everything else in it isn’t worth maintaining your pride as a handyman or woman — get it fixed and fast!
If worse comes to worst, and you do have a backup and need assistance with damage from water or sewage, call SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt Counties for 24/7 help at 217-935-2992.

Prevent Mold After Water Damage
3/31/2022 (Permalink)
Water damage is important to leave to professionals as any moisture left over can cause mold. Mold growth can start as soon as 24-48 hours after water damage. That's why it's important to act quickly and in most cases, call a professional to prevent secondary water damage and future concerns over mold.
There are several steps to take during a water damage situation:
- Remove all water
- Remove any wet material
- Dry remaining wet surfaces
- Sanitize all impacted surfaces.
If the water damage is not caught in time or the cleanup was not sufficient and there are concerns over mold growth there are important steps to take to mitigate additional mold growth.
Mold is a common home invader that favors moist, dark conditions. Finding it growing in your home or apartment is nothing to be ashamed of, but you need to act as soon as possible.
- Assess the issue. What you think is mold could just be mildew. While they are both fungi caused by mold spores, the treatment methods are different. Mold is typically black or green in color and might have a fuzzy or slimy texture. Mildew on the other hand is usually white, gray, or yellow. Additionally, you must assess the breadth of the issue.
- If you're living in an apartment call your landlord. Depending on the nature of the issue, mold clean up might be an issue for your landlord or property manager to resolve. Either way, it is in your best interest to inform them of the issue as soon as you can. Include pictures of the mold in your text or email.
- Once your landlord arrives, you should work with them to figure out what is causing the mold. If the mold is a result of a leaky pipe or other internal water issue, then your landlord should take responsibility for resolving the issue.
- Enlist in Professional Help. If the mold contamination is, in fact, your responsibility then it is a good idea to enlist professional assistance. This is especially true for larger mold issues. Mold tends to dig deep roots and can be exceedingly difficult to purge completely without the help of mold remediation professionals.
Do not allow mold to grow in your apartment and become a bigger issue than it needs to be. Resolve the issue quickly and efficiently by contacting your local mold remediation specialists here at SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt Counties.
Water Damage from Melting Snow
2/27/2022 (Permalink)
Living in the Midwest has taught us that one minute it could be significant snowstorms, and the next, it will be direct sunlight as if nothing had happened. People don’t connect with snow melting, and flooding issues as these types of floods aren’t as common. Flooding doesn’t occur unless the ice freezes near the structure, creating tiny cracks in the foundation. The problem begins when the chilly weather subsides, and now you have the perfect doorway into your home as water has a way to seep into the house.
Water Damage to the Carpets
During the winter, the water will seep into the cracks, which cause water damage to the drywall, flooring, or carpets. When it’s cold outside, we usually keep the temperature of our homes warmer than usual which helps microbial growth if the water reaches the carpet. The development will thrive in these conditions, especially if the homeowners don’t allow proper ventilation outwards. Still, if you follow these tips, you can help prevent unwanted disasters.
Tip 1: Be Strategic with Shoveling
When shoveling, you should be strategic in creating a pathway for the water to flow once it starts to melt. Meaning if your home is on a hill, find a way that eliminates the risk of large amounts of water-absorbing around the foundation of your home.
Tip 2: Clear Excessive Snow off of the Roof
When you don’t adequately remove the snow off of your roof, you are running the risk of having a ceiling collapse or, even worse, the creation of ice dams. When trying to prevent these ice dams, we advise you to get all snow off first and then get on the roof to evaluate the drains. This ensures you can clear any frozen blockage, which stops the problem before it begins.
Tip 3: Check Sump Pump
You can test your sump pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pump, which displays if it is working. Performing routine testing, you can help prevent flooding of the crawlspaces, around the foundation, and in the basement.
We have received a couple of samples of warmer days ahead on the bright side. Spring is right around the corner, which means even more ways for water to create problems for your home!
Water Stains on Your Ceiling?
1/5/2022 (Permalink)
Water stains aren’t something to ignore. Instead, they are indicators of an urgent matter!
If you see water stain(s) on your ceiling, you should request help promptly.
Water stains can mean:
- Leaky pipe(s)
- Old caulking
- Problem with roof
- Poor insulation
Whatever is above your ceiling is typically the source of the moisture issue. Is your property’s roof or a bathroom above the water stain? That may just be the source of the problem. However, if you cannot determine a water source above the stain, you may have a leaky pipe.
Water seepage from old caulking, or piping in disrepair are other common sources of water stains. It’s very important that damaged or old pipes are replaced to avoid leaking or “sweating.”
After a snowstorm or even a rain downpour, water stains can show up on your ceiling. For instance, rain can leak through from the gutter. Therefore, you have a roofing issue upon your property.
However, if an ice dam forms on your roof and water is able to seep in, it’s a good indicator of a need to improve the insulation.
Sometimes, a professional may need to remove a portion of the ceiling, and possibly the wall, to completely restore and fix the affected area for good.
Remember, deal with the stain in a very timely manner! Applying a quick coat of paint over the stain can make a temporarily, cosmetic difference, but often time, the stain will bleed right through the new paint.
Instead, call a professional to ensure the source of the water is correctly identified and handled properly. Ignoring the issue can lead to expensive repairs! It’s much better to catch the problem sooner than having to have sections of your ceiling teared down and replaced.

Is Your Water Damage Covered by Insurance?
11/2/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage is a common problem Piatt and DeWitt County homeowners face, and it takes many forms. From natural forces like hurricanes or flooding to internal issues like plumbing or gutter leaks, there are lots of ways for water to put a strain on your life.
One in every 50 homeowners experience some kind of water damage each year.
When your carpet is soggy or your basement is full of water, one of the first questions you need answered is whether your insurance policy will cover the damage. The short answer, unfortunately, is “it depends.” Let’s dig a little deeper.
What’s Covered?
First off, we should note that policies vary, so it’s important to know the details of your own homeowners insurance policy and to check things out with your agent when details become important. That being said, there are general standards about what may or may not be covered.
A handful of scenarios you can expect full coverage for include:
Sudden, accidental discharge. If leaky plumbing becomes an acute issue and suddenly there’s a burst pipe or broken supply hose, you should be covered.
Water damage cause by storms. As something over which you have no control, this is often covered by standard homeowners policies—your policy likely has separate provisions for coverage for your home and for your personal belongings.
What’s Not Covered?
Unresolved maintenance issues. Lack of maintenance essentially means you forfeit your right to coverage—damage caused by a long-term leak or flooring replacement due to a long-term toilet leak would fall under this category.
Replacing the source of damage. If your water heater bursts open suddenly, your policy may cover the damage it causes, but likely won’t pay for the replacement of the water heater itself. The same is true for plumbing, dishwashers and other similar sources.
What Else Can Be Covered?
Flood damage. Most standard homeowners policies do not include flood coverage, but it’s recommended (and in some cases, required) that you add flood insurance because of the increased risk.
Sewer overflow or backup. This dangerous, and frankly gross, damage may be covered with the addition of a rider or endorsement to your existing policy.
Whatever the cause and whatever the coverage, SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt Counties is available to help you get through your water damage woes. Contact us today to find out how we can get things dried up and set right.
Inspections and Maintenance Can Lower the Risk of Leaky Appliances Resulting in Water Issues
6/21/2021 (Permalink)
The dishwasher in your Piatt/DeWitt County residence certainly has made life a little easier than the tiresome hours that used to be spent in front of the sink hand cleaning every specific dish. While this appliance has offered much regarding efficiency and convenience, it is not entirely devoid of potential problems and threats to your home if it is not properly maintained.
One of the greatest risks that homeowners face with an aging dishwasher is water damages in their Piatt/DeWitt County house. From the simplest of mistakes that any user could make, to the literal degradation of the working parts that seal and operate your appliance, water damages are possible at any time. Avoiding these circumstances might seem impossible, but you can limit the possibility with some routine maintenance and repairs.
Many homeowners have this low appreciation for the appliances in their home, so much so that they react to the problems that their machines experience rather than checking them regularly for routine wear and tear concerns. Even an annual inspection can help to identify risks and potential problems and help you to avoid these concerns before they turn into substantial water loss events.
Sometimes, however, the dishwasher is not always the problem. User error has attributed to many water loss incidents in local homes as well, where the appliance did not get entirely closed or wedged open as the washing and rinsing cycles run. Several gallons of water can drain out onto the floors of the kitchen at this point, demanding immediate attention from competent restoration technicians like our SERVPRO team.
While initial assessment of the damage, however it originated, is critical to determining what must happen to restore it, this is a precursor to the work that must occur in that first visit. Extraction and even initial drying efforts can help to limit the widespread damage that weakens the structural elements of your home. Fast response from our SERVPRO technicians can help to reduce or even eliminate swelling and irreparable damage to flooring materials in this affected area of your home.
It might seem like there are so many threats to your home that are out of your control. Dishwasher concerns leading to water damages can often get avoided with the right precautionary measures and preventative maintenance, however. If you have a water emergency or require clean-up services in your home, do not hesitate to give our SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt Counties restoration specialists a call today at (217) 935-2992.

Water Damage Using The Right Equipment
4/1/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County understands that using the right equipment makes a huge difference in reducing claims loss expenses. Time is of the essence, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERPVRO of Piatt/DeWitt County will answer your call quickly 24/7 showing up with exceptional equipment and highly trained uniformed personnel. The right tool for the job is vital for timely mitigation. Even more important, the team at SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County thoroughly understands how to dry a structure and personal property effectively. Today I would like to explain in detail how different Dehumidification Equipment and Deodorization Equipment.
Dehumidification Equipment: By extracting water vapor from the air, dehumidifiers lower the relative humidity. This in turn increases the rate of evaporation. In a water damaged structure, dehumidifiers pull in the moist, humid air and then discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials. SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County uses two types of dehumidifiers:
- Refrigerant Dehumidifiers - work similarly to air conditioners
- Desiccant Dehumidifiers - use chemicals, called desiccants, that readily absorb moisture from the air.
Deodorization Equipment: -
- Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing fine mist that easily penetrates sites where odor-causing residues accumulate. The device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other difficult-to-access areas.
- Thermal Foggers dispense solvent-based products in large volume, dense fog suitable for confined areas. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that pair with and neutralize odor-causing particles.

One Small Leak

One Small Leak May Cause Large Damages
The ice maker in your refrigerator is a wonderful invention. It is great to have crushed or cubed
ice at the push of a button. No more ice trays to fill up or empty again. But, just like everything
these days, things can break down. Ice makers can clog, stop producing ice and perhaps the
worst, start leaking all over the freezer and floor. The leak could cause damage to flooring, floor
joist, drywall, and even insulation.
Here is a check list to determine why your ice maker might be leaking:
Check the water lines & tighten connections
Break up ice jams
Clear out the condensation drains
Level the refrigerator and ice maker
Check your water filer & Dispenser
If you do find damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Piatt/Dewitt Counties (217)-935-2992. We are

THE CAUSE BEHIND FREEZING EXPLODING PIPES
1/6/2021 (Permalink)
Many people have put a can of soda in the freezer before just to quickly get the beverage cold to drink. If you’ve ever forgotten about the can, you may have come back to a beverage that exploded all over your freezer. This exact same principle applies when your pipes freeze and burst. The reason for these explosions is because liquid expands when it reaches a freezing temperature. As existing water inside the individual pipe freezes and creates blockage, there is naturally nowhere for the water to go, causing the pipe itself to burst. Older homes may have constructed water systems with pipes in attics or even outdoors, exposed to the elements. Meanwhile, many newer homes are built to take into account the threat of frozen pipes, with some builders observing the proper precautions to shield piping from opportunities where freezing could occur. However, pipes can still burst.
What to do...
Plenty of precautions can be taken to prevent your pipes from freezing to begin with. Whenever the external temperature gets below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, you will need to be watchful and not let the inside of your home plummet under 32 degrees. For example, saving money on your heating bill is great when you’re out of town, but make sure the temperature inside your home does drop below freezing. If you do turn on a faucet and no water is coming out, immediately shut off the water, as you could begin creating more damage to your pipes. In the event you discover a pipe that has broken and is leaking water, the absolute first thing you’ll want to do is turn your water supply off at the source.
Minimize Damage and Start Cleanup
Your number one course of action should be contacting a professional to diagnose the problem. The longer the situation sits, the worse it’s going to become. Should you discover mold unexpectedly, the abatement process will stop deterioration from rapidly spreading. The same goes for home restoration following the most disastrous water damage. It’s critical that the drying process be started within the first 48 hours in order to effectively mitigate moisture damage. This will ensure that we can quickly assess the damage and begin the restoration process. SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County can help!

Shut Off the Water
Go to your main valve and turn the water off. They usually have a stop tap on them. It’s good to know where your water main is in case of emergencies, so if you don’t already know now is a great time to find out. Commonly this is found in the basement or garage, but may be found in other places as well. Shutting it off will stop the water flow. If you find that the pipe that burst is a hot water pipe then close the valve that’s on top of the water heater as well.
Remove Any Nearby Electronics
If there’s anything electric plugged in near the burst pipe that is not in or requires you to be in standing water go ahead and unplug it from the socket and move it away. This will prevent risk of a fire. DO NOT touch any electronics that are in standing water, do not walk thru standing water as there is a real risk of electrocution. Shut off the electricity from the breaker if possible, if not then call an electrician for assistance.
Call A Professional Immediately
Finding a 24-hour service to handle an emergency can be tough, but emergency water damage companies do exist, like SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County. We are fully licensed, highly trained and qualified.

Good Tips for Making a Storm Damage Insurance Claim
5/30/2020 (Permalink)
Insurance Claim
Sometimes Mother Nature likes to shake things up a little or even a lot. If your home didn’t weather a storm as well as you hoped it would, we’ve got some tips to help you file an insurance claim and get back on track quickly. Here’s where you should start.
Act quickly. Filing a claim with your insurance company in a timely manner is important for a couple reasons. Most insurance policies limit your time to file a claim, which makes being quick to connect essential. You’ll also want to repair the damage to your home or property before it has a chance to get worse. Both of these are very good reasons for reporting your claim promptly.
Review your policy. Know what your homeowners policy and optional insurance covers. How to proceed and what you can expect from the process, SERVPRO of Vermilion County can help with this! Every insurance policy and claim is different. Reviewing your policy gives you information that specifically applies to you.
Document everything. It’s smart to keep a log of the storm and the damage. Save news reports and take pictures immediately after to document any damage. Don’t start cleaning up until you’ve documented as much of the damage as is safe and wait to handle the big messes until after a claims adjuster has assessed the situation. A reputable mitigation company like SERVPRO of Vermilion County will document and take pictures both before, during and afterwards so your claim tells a story that is both easy to follow and informative.
Be wary of scammers. Unfortunately, storm damage can bring scammers to your area with promises of quick and cheap repairs. Whether you’re filing an insurance claim or not, research anyone who offers to repair your home. Look for businesses who are licensed, insured and experienced such as SERVPRO of Vermilion County.
Mitigate your damages. If the storm affected a large area, you may have to wait a while before a storm assessor can review your damage. Contacting SERVPRO of Vermilion County right away can help speed up the process. They can do things to help stabilize your situation and prevent the damage from becoming worse. This could include tarping your roof, cleaning up a wet basement, boarding up holes and more. They will document the damage, then document the steps taken to protect your property. Should you find yourself having to deal with storm damage, call SERVPRO of Vermilion County at 217-443-0077 and speak with one of our friendly staff today! We are available 24 hours a day seven days a week and we are here to help!
Puddles Aren't Supposed to be in Your Crawl Space

puddle in crawl space
Puddles in a crawl space, are not normal?
I always thought since the crawl space is under the home that it was normal to have puddles . After all, the ground gets wet and dry with different types of weather. It just seemed then, that the crawl space would have to have water in it.
Having puddles of water in the crawl space of a home is not good. However, what ruins your home is the moisture. Moisture can cause mold, rot, energy loss, and attract pests into the crawl space. Did you realize up to 50% of the air in a home comes from below?
You must find out how or why the water is getting into the crawl space. Has there been a plumbing leak? How about seepage from the surrounding soil from a heavy rain? It could be condensation, for an example: Humidity condenses on cold surfaces, like ducts, and may cause dripping onto the crawl space floor.
SERVPRO can extract, pull up old vapor barriers, clean, sanitize, and replace with lime and put down new vapor barriers. SERVPRO has submersible sump pumps, dehumidifiers and air movers to help with drying out the crawl space.
Don’t wait; call SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County to help dry out your crawl space today. We are just a phone call away, 217-935-2992.
Water From All Over

leaking dishwasher
As you know, water damage can happen anywhere in a home. A leaky roof after a storm to appliance malfunction can all cause extreme damage to your home. While water damage can pop up anywhere, there are certain rooms within a home that tend to see more flooding and leaks than other rooms and will normally require more intensive water damage repair. Here are the four most common rooms for potential flooding inside a residential home.
The Basement
The number one most commonly flooded room in a home is the basement. A basement has many opportunities for flooding as they tend to contain at least one appliance that can malfunction and leak (such as a washer, pipes, or the water heater). Basements can also have wall cracks that allow water from the ground outside to seep in. Sump pump malfunction and water drain back up are also contribute to flooding. Many families use their basements solely for storage, meaning they rarely go into it allowing leaks and other water damage to go unnoticed for long periods of time. This will obviously be a huge problem that calls for major water damage repair. To help prevent basement water damage, take time to regularly go down and check for indications of moisture, a musty smell, and any signs of mold.
The Laundry Room
We love our washing machines, but they are the culprits behind many household floods. Hoses burst and washing machines overflow, this can leave a huge mess and be a costly clean-up. The best way to prevent a problem before it starts is to observe it closely. If you notice your washing machine acting up or leaking even a little, repair it before it becomes a bigger issue.
The Bathroom
There’s so much water in a bathroom that it’s very common for there to be water damage problems. These issues may include things such as improperly sealed showers, toilets, and tubs; leaky faucets, and mold. In order to keep your bathroom from suffering from water damage, make sure to regularly maintain it and keep it as well-ventilated as possible.
The Kitchen
Dishwashers. Sinks. Refrigerators. The kitchen has so many opportunities for flooding and leaks. Serious leaks have been caused by all of these appliances. Pipes under the sink can be a big problem, too. Pay close attention to any strange “behavior” from your appliances. Make sure they are maintained and working properly to prevent any water damage. If anything is leaking, take care of it sooner rather than later!
What To Do First
In the event of flooding, it’s easy to panic and forget what should be done first. Finding standing water from a flood? You’ll need to immediately turn off the main power supply, if it’s in a dry area. Never turn off power while standing in water! If the main power supply is in a wet area, you should call an electrician.
If you ever find yourself faced with water or flood damage give SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County a call at 217-935-2992 and speak with one of our friendly team members today! Our team is highly trained and have a fantastic track record with our customers. We are here to help!
Claims Related to Water Damage

Caulking a Window
Claims relating to water damage incidents reached 19.5% in 2017. Don’t wait until a storm hits. You can take the proactive approach and protect your home before it’s too late. Here are five ways to help prevent water damage in your home or business. Delaying could leave you with costly damages. Instead, prevent the worst before the water pours in.
1. The Plumbing
Understanding your indoor plumbing system will make it easier to maintain. To start with, let’s take a look at your hoses and faucets. Check the hoses that lead to your dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, and water heater once a year. Make sure to immediately replace any hoses if they have a leak. These hoses should be replaced every five to seven years. When water remains in a hose, it can freeze in the pipe. In a worst-case scenario: your pipes bust, causing water damage to your floors, walls, and foundation.
Check the seal and caulking around your tubs and showers. If necessary, reseal them so these areas remain watertight. Check the heating pipes and plumbing for any leaks or cracks as well. Leaving on vacation? Shut off the main water supply, tagging your main water shut off is a good way of ensuring you know where the main water shut-off valve is. Should there be an emergency, you’ll be able to locate it immediately.
2. Prevent Water Seepage
Let’s head down into the basement. Check for any cracks in the building’s foundation or floor slab, resealing the basement may be a good option. Water can seep thru these cracks. It can be helpful to wait for a heavy rain before inspecting your basement to look for any water seepage. If you find some water intrusion you may be able to seal these areas with a water sealant to prevent future water damage.
3. Protect Your Possessions
Keeping an up-to-date home inventory is a great first step. Take photos of your possessions and make a note of where they are. This comprehensive list can help you file a claim in the event of damage. Having this list will also save you time and stress if you do lose possessions due to water damage. If there are items throughout your home you only need for a season, store them away when you’re done. Use waterproof bins, not cardboard boxes, to keep these items safe. Never store your valuables in damp areas to reduce the risk of mold. Be sure to install shelving within your basement. Should there be a sewer backup or house flood, keeping your valuables off the ground can help prevent water damage.
4. Repair Your Home’s Exterior
Attention to the outside of your house is important as well. Caulk and seal your windows to prevent water seepage. The roof is next. Are there any missing or loose shingles? Making necessary repairs can cause a headache later. Keeping your downspouts clear of debris can help prevent water building up. You can also install gutter guards to prevent these clogs. This keeps the water keeps flowing away from your home. Finally, check the irrigation system and sprinklers making sure they point away from your home as much as possible. Drain outside faucets as needed to make sure your pipes don’t freeze. .
5. Mold Prevention
Protecting your home from water damage can also help you prevent mold.
- Use air conditioners and dehumidifiers
- Keep the humidity level in your home between 30-60%
- Use exhaust fans in the bathrooms and kitchen
- Maintain your roof to prevent water seepage
- Don’t install carpets in damp areas
- Remove standing water
Let’s keep all that water where it belong, outside. With these tips for home water damage prevention, you can keep your family happy and safe.. Should you find that you find you have a water loss, give SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County a call at 217-935-2992. You will be happy to find that our friendly and caring staff is here to quickly get you and your family safely back to normal.
Unforeseen Water Problems

Pipe Burst In Assisted Living Facility
For a commercial property owner, unforeseen water problems can be a big issue. Luckily, a water damage professional can help you assess, clean, and repair damages from any flooding or leaks you may have. Here are a few of the most common water problems a business may face from leaking pipes to foundation cracks.
1. Pipe Breaks
A pipe break can occur in a number of ways. Over time, the pipe can age and loosen in its fittings, or extensive use can lead to pinhole leaks. Extreme heat or cold can also affect a pipe’s reliability. A blocked pipe can lead to pressure buildup and eventually burst.
2. Plumbing Backup
Blocked plumbing can even lead to a toilet backup or sink overflow. When a pipe is blocked, water can take the shortest path out regardless of its intended flow path. Blockages can occur from a number of things, including the buildup of water minerals over time inside a pipe or someone pouring a solidifying material, such as plaster or grease, down a drain.
3. Weather
Extreme weather conditions can also lead to leaking pipes. Cold temperatures can cause the water in pipes to freeze and expand. The extension puts pressure on the pipe and can create a crack or even cause it to burst altogether. If you know cold weather is coming, you can check with a local professional about what preventive measures to take.
4. Foundation Cracks
Foundation cracks can also become a problem leading to water damage. Water can seep through any cracks and pool, leading to further issues such as mold. Any cracks should be investigated and assessed as soon as possible to determine the best course of action.
Water damage can happen to a commercial property. Fortunately, a professional can fix the damage caused by leaking pipes, foundation cracks, backed up toilet, or weather, and help you repair your property. If you have any water damage call SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County anytime at (217) 935-2992.

Ice Damming During Winter Weather
Ice Damming Can Allow Water Damage to Piatt/DeWitt County Homes
Winter is upon the area, and Piatt/DeWitt County homeowners prepare for another season with significant snowfall. While many properties are virtually unaffected by the predicted snow to come, other homes are less fortunate regarding the damage that heavy snow staying on the roof of their house can do. Ice damming is among the most significant of the potential hazards that threaten the structural integrity of your roof, and this phenomenon is more common than you might think.
While the smaller side of the concerns for ice damming on your roof is the weakening of the structure, water damage restoration in Piatt/DeWitt County may be required when runoff and melting snow cannot find a means to leave the roof area. Ice damming occurs when melting snow beneath a fresh snow pack reaches the eaves of the roof and freezes at this point. To make matters worse, the condition continues to worsen without physically breaking them loose or having several warmer days to melt the ice.
Our SERVPRO professionals have helped many of our customers that have dealt with ice damming and the water damages that can result from the incident. As melting snow and runoff have no means of escape from the area, and the weight of the snow pack providing immense pressure on the roof itself, liabilities become exposed and exploited by the present water.
With efficient equipment designed to reduce overall humidity fast like our industrial-strength dehumidification machines, we can effectively bring moisture levels down to acceptable parameters in the attic space to prevent the growth of mold and fungus. With a licensed contracting division, our SERVPRO of Piatt/DeWitt County franchise can assist immediately with emergency board up services and include our professional reconstruction services as part of our comprehensive restoration package that saves our customers time and money.
Ice damming can happen to any home, even on some that have preventative measures in place to avoid it. If your home suffers water damage, let our experts help you to restore the damaged areas fast. How to Repair a Leaking Toilet Tank
2/25/2019 (Permalink)
8 Steps to Fix a Leaking Toilet
When you find water pooling near your home’s toilet in Piatt/Dewitt Counties don’t panic. Check to see if the leak is coming from the tank or the base. If the leaking toilet is at the tank, you can easily fix it with the following eight steps.
1. Shut off the supply water.
The tube below the tank is connected to a valve. Simply turn the valve until the water is off.
2. Remove the tank’s water.
Use a small container to bail the water out of the tank. Once most of the water is gone, use a sponge to absorb the last of it.
3. Loosen the tank’s bolts.
Using an adjustable wrench and screwdriver, loosen and remove both of the tank’s bolts. This will ensure easy removal of the tank.
4. Lift the tank from the base.
Very gently move the tank from side to side until you feel it lift. With the help of a friend, lift the leaking toilet tank and lay it on its side so you can access the bottom.
5. Eliminate the leaking retaining washer.
Remove the washer by turning it until it comes loose. If it is tight, use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the rubber piece.
6. Clean the remaining rubber.
Use something hard to scrape the remains of the gasket from the hole and surrounding area. Make sure the area is clean.
6. Install the tank’s new gasket.
Insert the new gasket into the hole and turn until it is tight. Make sure it turns easily because there is a danger of cross threading.
7. Replace the tank’s bolts and nuts.
Reinstall the nuts on the bolts by hand, making sure they are snug, but not overly tight.
8. Reattach the tank to the base.
Move the tank into position on the toilet base. Gently tighten the nuts and bolts until the gasket looks snug in the base. This will prevent a future bathroom leak.
You have just repaired your leaking toilet. However, if you don’t want to do the job yourself, consider calling a water specialist team to do the job quickly and efficiently. SERVPRO of Piatt/Dewitt counties is ready to help 24/7, Call us at (217) 935-2992. (LB)

Frozen Pipes

Learn How to prevent water pipes from freezing and How to thaw them if they do freeze
Why pipes freezing are a problem
Water has a unique property in it that it expands as it freezes. The expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are:
- Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
- Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basement and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
- Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.
How to protect pipes from freezing
Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:
- Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturers or installers directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
- Remove, drain, and store used hoses outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
- Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
- Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
- Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a “pipe sleeve” or installing UL-listed “heat tape”, “heat cable”, or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspapers can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
- Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
How to prevent frozen pipes
- Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to make any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
- When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe – even at a trickle – helps prevent pipes from freezing.
- Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nightline temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
- If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit
How to thaw frozen pipes
- If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a froze pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
- Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begin to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipes will help melt ice in the pipe.
- Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electrical hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
- Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you cannot thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
- Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze too.

Emergency Water Removal for Piatt/Dewitt County Residents

Water Removal in an Emergency
Water pipes are often not insulated in the home, particularly when traveling into cellar spaces or through garages. Plumbing systems are suitably robust. However, as they age, they become more susceptible to temperature changes or pressure. These elements cause the materials to expand and retract which, over time can loosen connections or split the pipes. When that happens, water can leak rapidly and require extraction.
It is rare that homeowners own the type of equipment needed to perform extraction themselves. Water removal in Piatt/Dewitt counties require industrial scale equipment to get the job down fast and reduce the likelihood of permanent damage. SERVPRO of Piatt/Dewitt Counties have an emergency call line that operates 24 hours a day and can send a trained technician to your property within four hours of notification of loss.
Generally, when standing water is over two inches high, it needs to be pumped. We use gas-powered fully submersible pumps to help remove excess water before moving in with extraction wands to treat saturated carpets or floorboards. When water levels are below two inches, we may not need to use pumps and move straight onto extraction equipment.
The primary technique for removing excess water is to extract. Extractors come in various sizes and can be scaled to depending on the extent of the spill. If the water is below five gallons, we can use portable extractors which are nimble and precise. Where there is extensive spillage, truck-mounted extractors can be brought in with storage tanks of more than one hundred gallons. A SERVPRO technician can access either type after inspecting the affected area.
Extraction equipment uses a vacuum component to help lift water from saturated carpets or fabrics. These need to be managed carefully as aggressive usage can damage carpets which are up to 50% weaker when drenched in water. SERVPRO technicians are trained to perform light, repeated pass overs that reduce the pressure put on wet materials and mitigates against further damages.

6 Tips to prevent pipes from freezing while Tenants are away.
12/10/2018 (Permalink)
Cold temperatures can cause pipes to freeze. Learn these 6 Tips to keep pipes on your property from freezing.
Tip #1: Keep the Heat on
When tenants leave for a period of time, make sure to keep the heat on on your property. Convincing Tenants to leave their heat on while they are away may be difficult, especially if they are responsible to pay for their own utilities. However you should inform them that in order to prevent pipes from freezing the heat should stay on. If pipes freeze and burst it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to their possessions. Keeping the heat as high as you normally would if someone was on the property is not necessary, 50 degrees Fahrenheit is a desired minimum temperature to set your thermostat to.
Tip #2: Allow Faucet to drip
If you are fearful of a frozen pipe, allow the faucet to drip slightly. Pressure is left in the system when allowing the faucet to be open. Pipe bursts are typically a result in the pressure that is created between the blockage and the faucet. Following this simple step prevents build up, keeping you pipe from bursting.
Tip #3: Keep Interior doors open
Pipes can often be located in cabinets. Any time the temperature drops, it is a great idea to keep those cabinet doors open so the heat in in the rest of the house/apartment can keep the pipes warm as well. You should also keep all the interior doors open so that the heat can flow throughout the entire living space.
Tip #4: Seal up cracks and holes
Tenants should consider to caulk any holes or cracks that exist near pipes. Calking both the interior and exterior walls is a must. Doing so can help keep the cold air out and the warm air in.
Tip #5: Apply Heating Tape
Electrical heating tape may be an option to keep from freezing, for pipes that are easily accessible. Heating tape can be applied directly to the pipe. There are two different types of heating tape. One type reacts based on when it senses heat, turning the tape on or off. The other type of heating tape has to be plugged in and unplugged when heat is needed or not needed. These products can be dangerous, similar to a space heater, so be sure to follow each products directions and safety procedures exactly before using.
Tip #6: Add extra insulation
Pipes that are located in areas that do not have proper insulation, such as basements and attics, may need extra insulation to keep from freezing. Basements and attics are not the only places that may not have the pipes properly insulated from the cold. If you have had a problem with pipes freezing anywhere in your home, extra insulation could be the cure. You can have pipes fitted with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves to help decrease the chance of freezing. This can be an easy solution for pipes that are exposed but can get expensive if walls, floors or ceilings have to be opened in order to properly insulate the pipe. Additional insulation can also be added to walls and ceilings to keep the pipes warm.
